YAC (Youth, Activities and Community)

YAC (Youth, Activities and Community, formerly the Youth Advisory Council of LC Nation), is up and running! Beth Turcotte is the coordinator of YAC and she works together with Ellie Field to get and keep the kids involved. The goal of YAC is for everyone to feel part of one community. It is important for the kids to know that we are vested in them but also that we need them and that they are an important part of our community. Hopefully, by keeping them involved and engaged they will remain a vibrant and caring segment of Little Compton and they will realize how important they are to all of us.

The group is geared toward 7th, 8th and 9th graders and we are glad to have any older kids that would like to return. YAC meets on Thursday afternoons. Although the meetings officially start at 6:00, the kids frequently come at 4:30 for homework help, snacks, and camaraderie. The meetings generally consist of food and planning. While they eat, the kids plan. They plan dances (monthly), movies (monthly), occasional special trips (including trips to Carabiners and skiing), as well as things that they can do for our community. Some of the things that they have done this Fall include two special craft and movie programs in conjunction with the PST and the LCCC, working as the babysitters at family movie night at LCCC, baking 41 apple pies at Thanksgiving for the VNA, and baking 73 dozen (that’s right, 73 DOZEN!) holiday cookies for the VNA to include in the food baskets.

The dances that the kids organize and host are generally the second Friday of each month and the teen movie night is the third Friday of the month. We have had between 50 and 60 kids attending dances and the teen movie night is growing. Parent volunteers and chaperones are always welcome and needed.

Children’s Theater Program to Debut at LCCC

The Little Compton Community Theater is excited to announce plans to create a Little Compton Children’s Theater Ensemble. This program will be open to children in the greater Little Compton area ages seven to fourteen and will be performing at the Little Compton Community Center in late spring, 2008. Interviews for those interested in directing this program for the 2008 season are currently being conducted and will be concluding in mid-January. Once a director is in place, auditions/sign-ups will be scheduled. Please watch for newspaper announcements and fliers which will contain future information. If you are interested in being notified directly or would like more information, please call 635-2400 or contact wyattly@lccenter.com with a current e-mail address along with a memo “Children’s Theater”.

4th Annual Little Compton Golf Outing

To Benefit the Little Compton Community Center
Now Accepting Registrations

Registration is now open for the 4th Annual Little Compton Golf Outing to benefit the Little Compton Community Center. This exciting golf event is made possible through the generosity of the Sakonnet Golf Club, a wonderful committee of volunteers, and a variety of community partners and sponsors.

Last year’s event raised $29,000 to benefit the many services and programs provided by the LCCC. The tournament will be held June 7, 2008 at the Sakonnet Golf Club in Little Compton with a rain date of June 8th. The event will begin with golfer registration at 11:30 am, followed by lunch at 12:00 pm and a shot gun start at 1:00 pm. After the tournament, golfers, guests and sponsors will come together for a 6 pm end-of day reception featuring heavy hors d’oeuvres, a wonderful silent auction, a raffle, and an awards ceremony. Registration is $175 per golfer, which includes entry to the tournament, a golfer gift bag, lunch, and admission to the end-of-day reception. Carts are $45 per cart. Foursomes will have priority. All singles, doubles, or threesomes will be placed on a waiting list and accommodated only if space allows. Volunteers, silent auction items and sponsors are still needed to help with the event. Sponsorships range from $150 to $10,000 and all levels are appreciated! Space is limited with the tournament filling up fast—so put your foursome together today! For more information or to register, please call the center at 401-635-2400 or download a printable sponsorship application at http://www.lccenter.com.
